Introducing Petahead Telehealth: Specialist Guidance for ZooMed (exotic) Pet Owners

At Petahead, we understand that owning a ZooMed pet (exotic animal) comes with its unique challenges and questions. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Petahead TeleHealth, a personalized virtual service designed exclusively for ZooMed (exotic) pet owners like you.

What is Petahead Telehealth?

Petahead Telehealth is a convenient and accessible platform that connects you directly with our team of ZooMed (exotic) veterinary specialists.
Our TeleHealth service offers two main features: TeleMedicine and TeleAdvice/Triage.
Before you book your appointment, please make sure you have read the information on this page as consultations are non-refundable.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE

The difference is whether a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) has occurred recently or not, and if the pet is in the state where the VCPR was stablished.
In other words, if your pet has recently been examined by the specific veterinarian on the call with you or not, and if you are in the same state where the VCPR was stablished. If your pet has been examined by a veterinarian, other than the one on the call with you, it does not configure a valid VCPR. If you are traveling out of the state where the VCPR was stablished, the VCPR is no longer valid. That is part of the big veterinary regulations we must comply to, so unfortunately, no exceptions.
If a valid VCPR exists, and you and your pet are on the state where the VCPR was stablished, we can have a TeleMedicine call. If no valid VCPR exists, or if the VCPR is not recent, we can only have a TeleAdvice/Triage call.
The time in which a VCPR is consider valid, varies from state to state. For example, in California a VCPR is generally considered valid for a period of one year from the date of the last physical examination by the veterinarian in question. Those rules do change time-to-time, and other variables might apply case-by-case. The veterinarian on the call will be the only person able to evaluate specific scenario and determine the type of interaction legally available.
Before you book your appointment, please make sure you have read the information on this page as consultations are non-refundable.

TELEMEDICINE

TeleMedicine provides a convenient way to connect with our ZooMed specialists for established patients, meaning, patients that were seeing in person on a timely manner by the specific veterinarian on the call with you. Through video calls we can assess your pet’s condition, monitor progress, and offer tailored advice. This service is ideal for follow-ups, minor concerns, and managing ongoing treatment plans.
However, telemedicine has its limits. While we can review your pet’s history, symptoms, and visuals to provide guidance, a physical examination may still be necessary for accurate diagnosis or treatment. If we determine that an in-person visit is required, we will guide you accordingly. Please note that prescriptions can only be provided within an established Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR), as required by law.
In addition, for TeleMedicine calls, you and your pet need to be in the same state of the original VCPR (no TeleMedicine while traveling with your pet, sorry). The veterinarian on the call will be the only person able to evaluate specific scenario and determine the type of interaction legally available.

TeleAdvice/Triage

TeleAdvice involves the provision of general health information, opinions, guidance, or recommendations concerning prudent future actions that are not specific to a particular patient’s health, illness, or injury. Our veterinary specialists can offer advice on topics such as preventive care, nutrition, habitat setup, and more.
Please note that teleAdvice is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent specific medical conditions in your pet.
TeleTriage allows for the safe, appropriate, and timely assessment and management of animal patients via electronic consultation with their owners. Our veterinary specialists will assess your pet’s condition based on the history and clinical signs provided by you, sometimes supplemented by visual information such as photographs or videos.
The goal of teleTriage is to determine the urgency of your pet’s situation and provide guidance on whether immediate referral to a veterinarian is necessary.
Before you book your appointment, please make sure you have read the information on this page as consultations are non-refundable.
