Hello! It’s a pleasure to virtually meet you! I am Laila Proença, proud native of Brasília, Brazil. I am the founder and CEO of PETAHEAD, a dedicated space where we can share knowledge and empower pet owners through zoomed (exotic animal medicine)! I became a veterinarian in 2004 and after a lot of work, sweat, and tears, I became the first South American to be recognized as a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (DACZM), with a focus on zoological companion animals (a.k.a. exotics). I have always been passionate about zoomed and I’ve always wanted to make a positive impact in my community by empowering and educating through this specialized field. It is extremely important to me to promote equality and access to knowledge.
I’ve created PETAHEAD to be the plataform to achieve all the changes I want to see in the world for pet owners.
When I started practicing zoomed, the information was scattered, incomplete, and not easily accessible. Mistakes and sacrifices marked the path that I followed to become part of the elite group of ACZM specialists. I quickly recognized that the opportunity to learn was not available to everyone, and the cost was often prohibitive. Unfortunately, this reality has not yet changed. Zoomed is a passion for many pet owners, and it pains me to see them struggle because they don’t have access to the information needed to care for their pets effectively.

I had to do something about it. I had to share. Knowledge is the only way to change.
I believe the answer is to empower people to change their own lives, which, in turn, will change the world—one person, one pet at a time. That is my passion and that is why PETAHEAD was started.
What does PETAHEAD do?
PETAHEAD provides comprehensive educational content and resources that help pet owners understand and care for their ZooMed (exotic) animals, making it possible for them to follow their passion for and maintain the health and happiness of their pets.
We want pet owners to feel empowered. To start engaging in a pet care approach that has a meaningful impact.
We also want to foster more empathy and connection. Impact is a lifelong pursuit that brings meaning to our lives beyond the personal. It’s focused on others, which is crucial for us all to cultivate. Impact touches everything from diversity to environmental stewardship.
Why did PETAHEAD start?
It all began with an eagerness to share knowledge. I took over 20 years of experience and expertise out of my head and poured it into PETAHEAD to assist others who share the same passion. The rest is history, and now we are fortunate to have more talent join our movement with the same goals and enthusiasm.
After a person engages with our content, we want them to create a more fulfilling life for themselves and their pets andto aim for the stars.
We keep our services focused on zoological companion animals (a.k.a. exotics). We maintain this focus with online resources, handouts, teleconsulting, and community support.
